Black Coffee

The South African king of Afro-House and award winning DJ/producer, made a quick and successful rise to fame in the international electronic music scene, and there is nothing stopping him from rising higher. Originating from the vibrant and soulful country, South Africa, Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo had a passion and talent for music and so decided to pursue it as a career.

Nkosinathi was born in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal but at a young age he and his family moved to the Eastern Cape. It was music which brought him back to his hometown. Freshly out of school, the young Nkosinathi went head first into pursuing his career as a DJ. The young soon to be famous DJ began his studies at Natal Tech where he strengthened his knowledge in music and began to find his individual and unique sounds which would later play a big role in his rise to fame. It was also here that he made close friendships with two other aspiring DJs, Thandukwazi “Demor” Sikhosana and Mnqobi “Shota” Mdabe.

Once graduating the three friends combined together to make an Urban Soul trio named Shana. They moved to South Africa’s biggest bustling city, Johannesburg, where the music and film industry thrives. It was in Johannesburg that they first began creating and performing their music. While still remaining loyal to the trio, the musicians continued to work on their individual music careers.

Black Coffee soon began gaining recognition from South Africa’s biggest DJs and producers and it was in 2005 that he made his big break when his song, “Happiness” which was featured on the “DJs At Work” album. After the success of his single, the young DJ took it one step further and released his first individual album, “Black Coffee”. In regards to the album, Black Coffee said that he kept the process of producing his music simple and easy but brought it alive by adding live instrumentals and soulful vocals.

It was in the year 2013 that Black Coffee reached international recognition. He played DJ sets spanning from South Africa to Europe such as performing at ADE, Boiler Room and the Cape Town Electronic Festival.

With a few nominations and awards from international (MTV) and national award shows under his belt, the DJ has recently been travelling around the globe, from Africa to America to Europe. It is through his pure passion and talent that Black Coffee has rightfully earned the fame he worked for.
